No sewer cleanout: can the line still be inspected?

The absence of a visible cleanout does not mean there is no possible camera access. It does mean the provider should explain which opening they intend to use and whether that route allows a meaningful survey. Some methods of access involve extra labor or restoration.

Ask what access is available

A provider may investigate existing plumbing openings or recommend adding access. Ask which direction can be inspected and how much of the system the camera can reach. A survey of one branch is not the same as a complete inspection to the public connection.

Compare temporary and permanent access

If a fixture must be removed, ask whether removal, a new seal, reinstallation, and testing are included. If a cleanout is recommended, ask for its location and the reason it improves future maintenance. Equipment access and code requirements should inform the design.

Document the limits

The report should state the starting point, distances, direction, and any uninspected section. Ask whether a second access point would materially change the repair recommendation. This is especially useful when buying a home or reviewing a whole-lateral replacement quote.

Your next-step checklist

  • Ask which direction the camera can travel
  • Include fixture reinstatement where needed
  • Record all uninspected sections
