Wet patch outside: sewer lateral leak or water service leak?

A wet patch does not identify which underground pipe is leaking. A supply leak, drainage leak, surface runoff, or groundwater can look similar. The right repair begins with identifying the source rather than assuming that the nearest sewer route is responsible.

Look for patterns without disturbing the ground

Note whether the patch persists through dry weather and whether it changes when water is used in the house. Record any unusual bill change, but do not treat that as proof of a sewer defect. Wastewater piping and metered supply piping have different roles. Keep clear of sinking pavement or unstable soil.

Ask how each line will be checked

A sewer camera evaluates accessible drainage piping. A water-service leak may need a different locating or testing approach. Ask the provider which line is implicated, where it runs, and how the findings separate a leak from a drainage or grading problem.

Get the location into the scope

Before excavation or a trenchless quote, request the depth and marked location of the confirmed defect. Ask whether utility locating, pavement work, and restoration are included. A clear location and diagnosis prevent a sewer repair contract from becoming an open-ended search for a supply leak.

Your next-step checklist

  • Keep away from subsiding ground
  • Record weather and water-use patterns
  • Confirm which utility line is faulty before work
